The Afternoon Rush - Gary Gramling - Baker can have Carolina in the Wild Card hunt

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Gary Gramling of SI joined The Afternoon Rush to discuss Baker vs Sam, could Jimmy G end up in Cleveland and should LA have concern over the shoulder of Matthew Stafford.

That's Gary Grahmblaine. Gary, good afternoon. How are you? I'm good. How are you guys? We're doing well, Gary, course, here in Charlotte. Everything about the quarterback situation with Baker versus Sam two weeks in. Matt rule, not really leaning anyway right now, at least publicly. Who Do you think should be the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers? Well, you think it would be Baker. Uh, you know, I think in a vacuum, if they hadn't made the trader bakers this offseason, if you were pitting Sam Donald Versus Baker Mayfield in a Ben mcadoo offense, I think mcadow might lean Donald. I think he might want to kick the tires on a on a more treatsy guy. Not that Baker is uh, not traty, but he's not quite in Sam's class there. But I don't understand why you'd make the trade if you didn't really plan on it being Baker's job to lose at this point. And really he's he's the better quarterback. I don't think Sam Donald is a is a start in the NFL. I think Baker Mayfield is a starter. Maybe not a good one, but yeah, I think it's got to be Baker in the end. So if it is Baker area, you know, if it was SAM starting compared to Baker,...

...how much better do you think this team is? You hope you have some stability there. It's just I mean if it's a big if, but if you go back two years when Baker Mayfield was healthy, I don't think he was a star, but he was just a stable starting quarterback for the browns and you know that that's a highly schemed offense up in Cleveland. It's it's a little bit different, presumably, than than what Ben mcindho's gonna roll out in September here. But you know, it's just that there's something you said for just having, uh, you know, being above that baseline level, having that above replacement level starter in the lineup at the most important position. And I think that's what you get Baker Mayfield. So Uh, you know, obviously a lot of areables going on with this team. Uh, the offense is not going to be world beaters here, but yeah, you know, you'd think they could be in the wild card hunt with the Baker Mayfield healthy and sort of playing up to his capabilities. Gary grambling now joining us...

...on the afternoon rush. And I agree with you, Gary, that Baker he's a better quarterback. Why would you trade for him if he's not going to be the starter? But with the narrative that they try to continue on from Panther's training camp, are they just making it harder than it has to be right now at the quarterback position, and why? I don't know. I mean you want to make him earn it. I mean this this kind of not to this is like the most unflattering comp you could possibly give. But you know, like you had it last year down in Jacksonville where they were splitting reps between Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew, and it was like, guys, this is so stupid, like you're just setting your young quarterback back at this point. You're just taking away valuable Reps. uh, there might be a little bit of that going on, but I guess Ben mcadoo, my understanding is, is he was not a big fan of Baker's coming out in the tween draft, when mcadoo is obviously he's still uh uh in New York at that point. So I think Ben was probably kind of intrigued by...

...the prospect of trying to develop Sam Donald here. You know what would you call like five, but what's the sense down there at this point? That's gonna be Baker Mayfield in September. That feels accurate five, but for us it's like, but I don't know why, Matt Rule is just so we're gonna take our time evaluating the quarterbacks. We're looking for the five Gary, Gary grambling now joining us on the afternoon rush in Defensive Gary. I know you talk about this team. There's a lot of variables. Offense isn't going to be world beaters. Will this defense and be good enough to be winning games for this team this year? Well, that's a that's obviously the huge question here. I mean they're so fast, they're so young and I think around mid season last year it looked like they might be on a trajectory to be one of the I don't want to say elite defenses, but certainly easily a top ten unit, maybe a top five unit, considering the youth and and you know the way you expect guys to develop her and then it it...

...just sort of went off the rails. Well, that every I mean every phase of the game went off the rails. Late last season for this for this team here. So the potential is there. I mean there's plenty of talent. Lord knows they've they've invested plenty of draft capital in building up this defense. Uh, we'll see what it is. We'll see if Phil Snow is the guy and uh, you know it's it's a huge question mark, but you could certainly there's such a wide range of outcomes here, but you certainly could see that unit being, like I said, potentially a top five unit if all breaks right. It's just such a huge if and it's so difficult to figure out what they're going to be considering how they really took a step back in the second half of Gary. Drama continues the rule the DAY UP IN CLEVELAND. We await the appeal decision and what happens with Deshaun Watson. We know he got six games originally, but the NFL about that appeal and we wait to say how many games it does end up being. If it does end up going up to ten, twelve, perhaps even the entire...

...season Britas Shawn Watson being suspended, would that put the browns in the Jimmy G business? Do you think? Uh, maybe, I mean look, I'm I'm probably the biggest Jacoby Brissette Fan uh in the world outside of his immediate family. I think that is a serviceable starting quarterback and I think he fits that system really well. I think it really fits his strengths and it really uh, you know, his weaknesses is quickness of processing and there's just not a whole lot of quick strikes stuff in there. It's pretty highly schemed. Uh. It gets them lat into the down. That's what you want if Jacoby Brissette is your quarterback. I think they're fine with him. I I really do. I don't think I think Jimmy Garoppolo is better. I don't think Jimmy Garoppolo is that much better, uh, and I'm not sure stylistically Jimmy Garoppolo is is a better fit for what they do offensively UH in Cleveland. But that that might just be me. I'd be surprised if they took another swilling at a quarterback here, uh, considering a math of money...

...they're already thrown around at this point and Gary, regardless of who that quarterback ends up being taken over for Watson, they're gonna need that running game to help them out and as if the browns needed any more drama. Now you've got Kareem Hunt Not happy. Originally said he wasn't gonna take part in any team drills. That changed yesterday. I believe he returned to team drills. But this seems to be really the last thing the browns need at this point is more drama. I know it. See. It's either that or they all want to point at Kareem Hunt and uh and say let's talk about this guy for a while. UH, yeah, I don't I don't really know there's any market for Kareem Hunt. I don't know if there's an outcome that's very good for him at this point. I mean the team might do mas solid and and give him sort of a UH something of a concession in a new contract here, but I don't I just don't see a scenario where like Kareem hunt ends up somewhere else. I don't know who's going to give up anything of value for him. Talk in NFL with Gary grambling from a sports...

...illustrated Gary of course, story late last week Matthew Stafford and you know shoulder soreness he's dealing with. When you look at that, I mean is that a low level of concern or something that that the l a rams need to be very cautious about. There's a concern. I mean, look, I think it's a big concern for both the rams and the bengals. You have the two teams that this is the first time we have teams coming off a twenty one game season. I think where and tear is really going to show up with those two teams, and the fact that it's showing up in uh, in August, is kind of problematic at this point. I mean, we were having similar conversations about Dak Prescott, uh, coming off his, you know, various injuries this time last year and I do think that probably played a role in Prescott really deterior even down the stretch last season. Everyone's gonna get beaten up during the season. It's just it's just kind of a bummer when you go into the season and you're already banged up. And we know Matthew Stafford is a little bit older. We know he's going to stand in take some hits uh, the way he plays stylistically and yeah, it's...

...you know, there's something you do about it. It's not like you're gonna go out and get another quarterback, but uh, it's something of a it's a little red flag popping up there. And I know you mentioned earlier the Jags in their quarterback competition last season. You feel like you're at least in a better spot because urban Meyer isn't the head coach and that's an automatic win. But Doug Peterson there, Trevor Lawrence entering a second year, just feel like they got better on this roster. I'm not saying this is gonna be a playoff team, but could this be a team that makes a significant improvement with Trevor Lawrence and Doug Peterson? I mean they certainly have a chance to. I don't think they're that low on talent. Uh, we'll see. I mean I don't know what else to say about that team. I thought they could be, uh, you know, a seven or eight win team last year and then obviously, boy just you can't have a worse coaching staff at that point. So you get a professional coaching staff in there. Let's...

...see what happens that. You certainly saw the flashes from Trevor Lawrence. Uh Kenny put it together for, you know, sixty snaps every week. That's the big question mark. and You wonder what kind of scars were left last year by by having to be part of that circus. So a huge question mark. You could you could certainly see them getting to I could see them getting to seven or eight wins, but I thought so last year too. So I kind of don't want to make any more Jaguars predictions. Maybe ever again. Gary One of the areas I'm sure todd bowl is the last place he wanted to see some injury concerns. It was the offensive line, but unfortunately that's what they got with right jets and went down with that knee injury and he's gonna Miss it looks like most of the year, if not all these season. How much concern would you have about the bucks with that injury? Maybe not in the regular season, but as they get into the playoffs? Yeah, I mean that's a big look that. That's that's a quarterback who, you know, as great as tombrey is, he he can't really protect himself back there other than really relying heavily on quick rich stuff. UH,...

...they're working in some new faces that wide receiver. There's just there's a lot going on there. So we'll see what happens. I mean, I realized they came back in that playoff game against the rams and and you don't want to draw too much off of one game anyway, but you know, when Tristan worth's got banged up, it was trouble. I mean they need a very sturdy offensive line. UH, they really. I mean there one of the few run games in the league that really attacked those a gaps, those interior runs really heavily. Uh, Losing Ryan Jentsen is huge for them. I mean outside of Brady certainly. On one hand, uh, he was one of their uh five most valuable players. So we'll see what happens here. But uh, I think that team is a little more rickety than maybe people expect. Garry Grand Blaine sports illustrated Gary. Last thing will end back with the panthers. The reports out there of Sam Donald maybe being shopped. Sam spoke to the media earlier. They actually said Scott Fitterer told him after practice nothing to see there. Would there be any trade interest for Sam...

Donald, do you think in the NFL? I wouldn't think so. I mean it's been two franchises now, it's been a couple of different systems. It just hasn't really worked out I could. You know, I think he's a guy who's gonna stick around in the League for a long time, but I don't think anyone sees him as a starter. He's not really. I mean I don't know what you have to do contractually to to make that work where someone would say this is a good value as a as sort of an emergency backup, you know, potential long term number two type guys. So I just don't see I don't see anyone uh coming in getting them. And on top of that you have a really good quarterback class setting up for next year's draft. So I don't even think anyone's really putting themselves in a position to say, well, we'll bring him in. Maybe we're the team that unlocks it. I don't really think anyone's looking at Sam Donald that way. Garry Graham, Lyin sports illustrated Gary, always appreciate the time and Char I'll thank you very much. Always a pleasure, guys. Thanks for having me there. You Go. Great stuff with Gary as usual. Take a time out. What's trending comes your way next.
